Tourists taking luxury holidays in Phuket during the peak period have always claimed delays and overcrowded airport. These delays have been a turn-off for certain tourists.

However, Airports of Thailand (AOT) is planning to woo tourists who plan holidays to Phuket. The authorities are expected to put in 5 billion bahts into the expansion of Phuket International Airport, Thailand’s second largest airport, to bring its capacity up to 11.5 million passengers by the year 2016, which would be an increase of 77% over current capacity.

Over the years, Phuket International Airport has been the most sought after gateway for several million tourists planning luxury holidays in Phuket from around the world. In fact, in line with the growing numbers of visitors, public and private agencies are planning to upgrade the airport and improve its facilities for passenger comfort.

Due to ever-increasing growth in the number of passengers, the new airport terminal is expected to be completed in early 2015 and be operational at full capacity by 2018. The expansion plans call for a new international terminal, refurbishment of the existing terminal for domestic use and other airfield improvements. Terminal construction is expected to start in July 2012.

The new facility is expected to reach its maximum capacity of 12.5 million passengers, arriving to and departing from Phuket in 2018.
